We, the undersigned, are opposed to the currently implemented unproven and potentially dangerous Needlepoint Bipolar Ionization (NPBI) equipment, which is used by all six schools of the Mamaroneck Union Free School District (MUFSD). We call on the Superintendent and the Board to:

1. Immediately implement CDC-recommended, safe and effective portable HEPA filters in all classrooms, hallways and bathrooms
2. Immediately turn Off unproven and potentially dangerous NPBI equipment

Draft emails for the week of 10/4

Dear MUFSD Board of Trustees and Dr. Shaps,

I have recently learned that the NPBI tech installed in all 6 MUFSD schools is not backed by science, including by the EPA, CDC, US Department of Education, NY State Education Department, ASHRAE and many others. Unfortunately, even a great result from the upcoming ozone test won’t prove that NPBI is safe.

Ions are the building blocks of other particles and are known to move deep into the lungs and cause health issues. Ions can also combine with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to form new toxic particles in the air.

Did you know that scientists don’t know the impact of high concentrations of ions on lung cells, skin cells and human health?

I am not okay with installing technology in our schools that has even a chance of causing irreparable damage to my child/ren at {School name}. I ask that you immediately disable the NPBI units, remove them and install appropriately-sized portable HEPA air cleaners in all spaces students and staff use.

We understand that you were under tremendous pressure to do more quickly last year. Now that we know more about NPBI, we musn’t pretend that we don’t.

I look forward to your follow-up regarding the timeline for these definitive actions.

Thank you,

{Your name}

Dear MUFSD Board of Trustees and Dr. Shaps,

The ionization technology that you installed in our schools lacks scientifically credible evidence of its effectiveness and, frighteningly, even its safety. There is no reason to use technology that has a chance of hurting student & staff health when a safe and proven alternative exists with HEPA air cleaners.

The fact that the Board continues to espouse information provided by the people selling you the NPBI devices is like believing Philip Morris that smoking cigarettes won’t damage lungs. The ozone test you are doing won’t prove that NPBI is safe even with a great result.

The Board needs a better understanding of the science behind this tech. The letters sent to you from prominent scientists who recommend not  using NPBI in our schools are clear.

The path forward to make it right: 1) remove the NPBI devices and 2) install portable HEPA air cleaners in all classrooms, hallways and bathrooms.

Please follow-up with the timing of your urgent next steps on removal of the iWave devices and installation of portable HEPA air cleaners.
